Often referred to as Constable Country this lovely region of Suffolk is an area rich in architecture, history and beautiful landscapes that inspired the famous painter John Constable and featured in many of his paintings. Our base for exploring this delightful region is the picturesque Tudor village of Lavenham with its profusion of half-timbered medieval cottages, beloved by photographers and referred to as “the most complete medieval town in Britain”, a tribute to its fine collection of medieval and Tudor architecture.
Excursions Included
- Full day exploring the timeless beauty of rural Suffolk. We include visits to Dedham whose church tower features in many of Constable’s paintings, also to Flatford Mill, owned by Constable’s father the mill and its surroundings provided the subject matter for many of his paintings and today houses a display about the artist.
- Full day visit to Cambridge, one of the most attractive cities in Britain situated on the picturesque River Cam. A great wealth of architecture is just part of the splendour of this city, its crowning glory being King’s College Chapel. Enjoy a stroll along the grass-covered banks of the river and maybe take a ride in a punt to appreciate the architectural splendour of the riverside colleges. (Guided walking tours available).
- A short day visit to Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town where the legacies of 2000 years of history exist alongside 21st century culture. Explore the quaint old cobbled streets, full of small character-filled shops and cosy tearooms and perhaps visit the Colchester Castle Museum.
