The scenic beauty of Norway’s Fjord Country is famous throughout the world, a spectacular vista of towering snow capped mountains, picturesque valleys and cascading waterfalls descending into deep blue fjords. This superb holiday will show you some of the finest scenery in Western Norway with highlights including the Vikafjell Mountains, the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord, the city of Bergen, plus an opportunity to enjoy the famous ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ excursion.
ITINERARY
- Day One: Early departure for our journey north to Newcastle where we board the DFDS cruise ferry ‘Queen of Scandinavia’ for the 15.00 hrs departure to Norway. Time to relax and enjoy the ship’s facilities which include large public areas, a choice of dining options from café bar to a la carte and gourmet restaurants, a wine bar, piano bar and the Columbus Club entertainment lounge and casino.
- Day Two: We arrive in Bergen late afternoon and commence travelling through the beautiful Norwegian scenery to the popular resort of Voss and the Fleischers Hotel, our home for the next three nights.
- Day Three: We take a spectacular drive across the Vikafjell Mountain Road to the shores of the magnificent Sognefjord and the little town of Vik. Here there will be an opportunity to visit the Hopperstad Stave Church, one of the few remaining Stave Churches in Norway, dating back to the 12th century.
- Day Four: A day at leisure to relax in Voss or an option to take the famous Norway in a Nutshell excursion. Enjoy a ride on the main line train up to Myrdal in the snow-capped mountains, then a journey on the Flam Mountain Railway. The train descends some 2800ft down through twisting tunnels in and out of the mountain to the resort of Flam, a favourite port of call for many cruise liners. From here enjoy a cruise along the narrow Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen, then finally by coach to the Stalheim pass and back to Voss. (This excursion may be operated in the reverse direction depending on prevailing timetables)
- Day Five: We leave Voss and travel along the shores of the beautiful Hardangerfjord in Norway’s fruit growing region and stop at the Steindalsfossen Waterfall at Norheimsund. Continue on to the city of Bergen, arriving around lunchtime at the four star Grand Hotel Terminus where we stay overnight. Spend the afternoon exploring this lovely city with its delightful wooden houses and harbourside and perhaps take a ride on the funicular railway for some fine views of the city.
- Day Six: We Board our cruise ferry once again sail along the coastline calling at Haugesund and Stavanger, before heading out to sea for our overnight crossing towards Newcastle.
- Day Seven: We dock in Newcastle at 10.30 and disembark, then return home to North Wales.
